Against All Odds: Spurs to prove a bridge too far for Chelsea

8May 2013

England - Premier League

It's crunch time in the Premier League as Tottenham travel to Chelsea tonight knowing that defeat isn't an option, and Paul Robinson thinks that those tuning into Sky Sports One at 19:45 will see Spurs pick up at least a point.

Chelsea are one victory away from securing Champions League football for next season and that is somewhat of a surprise given their predicament a month or two ago. The Blues were in the midst of a fixture pile-up and it appeared that the two North London clubs had the momentum going into the final phase of the season.

Rafa Benitez has silenced his critics though and not only are Chelsea almost certain to finish in the top four, they are through to the Europa League Final. Nevertheless, the players have got to start tiring at some stage and given the effort they put in to win at Old Trafford on Sunday, tonight could be the breaking point.

The likes of David Luiz, Eden Hazard and Juan Mata have played a lot of minutes recently and if they misfire, especially the latter two, Chelsea are somewhat vulnerable to quality opposition.

Tottenham are of course quality opposition and despite stuttering in the last month or so, they know that Champions League qualification is still in their own hands. Victory this evening would see them leapfrog Arsenal and move level on points with Chelsea in third.

Jermain Defoe and Emmanuel Adebayor haven't really been firing but Gareth Bale continues to shine - it's now 20 Premier League goals for him this season - and both Clint Dempsey and Gylfi Sigurdsson have an eye for goal.

This should be a pulsating clash in what could turn into a bit of a cup-tie atmosphere and I really think Spurs can upset the odds and take something from the match. That's why, with Chelsea trading around the 1.96 mark, I have to make them my lay of the day.
