ATP Mutua Madrid Open Betting: Stepanek to land a Madrid double over struggling Tomic

ATP Masters 1000

The world's top tennis stars are at the Mutua Madrid Open on the clay and Sean Calvert fancies a veteran Czech in Sunday's opening round matches..

The second clay court ATP Masters 1000 event of the season is underway in Madrid and Sunday sees the start of the men's first round matches.

There are five games in the main draw scheduled for today and they are: David Goffin vs. Fernando Verdasco; Pablo Andujar vs. Marin Cilic; Julien Benneteau vs. Gilles Simon; Bernard Tomic vs. Radek Stepanek; Jeremy Chardy vs. Horacio Zeballos.

Goffin and Verdasco are both struggling at the moment and that one could go either way, with Verdasco at home in Madrid under pressure to get some wins. Chardy against Zeballos is a horrible match to make a prediction in, but one that should go to form is surely to take Stepanek to defeat Tomic.

This pair met at the same stage of the same tournament last year and Steps eased through in straight sets over the Aussie, who really is all at sea on a clay court.

Not a lot has changed since last year other than Steps underwent neck surgery in January and has been easing himself gently back onto the tour with appearances in Monte-Carlo, Barcelona and Munich.

A couple of wins on clay in Davis Cup last month don't seem to have improved Bernie's awful tour results on the dirt and outside of Australia he still doesn't seem the same player as he is at home.

He was schooled 6-2, 6-0 by Juan Monaco last time out on the clay in Barcelona, after struggling past Kenny de Schepper the previous round and his overall record against top-50 ranked opponents on clay is 3-11, with two of those wins coming over Denis Istomin and the other against Ernests Gulbis.

If Stepanek is fully fit he shouldn't have too many problems and 1.70 is a decent reflection of his chances in this match.
