England vs Italy

The one remaining quarter-final kicks off this evening between England and Italy. These two teams now come under the category of dark horses for this tournament with the big two of Spain and Germany being firm favourites. Both of these two teams will expect to be in the final and the only question is if Portugal, England or Italy can deny them?

There is little to choose between Italy and England and there is little history between the two nations in international tournament finals. Italy defeated England 2-1 in the 3rd/4th place play off match in the 1990 World Cup and they also beat them 1-0 in the finals of the 1980 European Championships as well. Both teams can defend really well and arguably are the two best defensive teams in the tournament.

Although it has to be said that teams like Spain and Germany defend simply by having the ball all the time. It could really turn into a battle here inside the Olympic Stadium in Kiev and the match could easily go to extra-time and penalties. That will suit Germany who will have had a full two days more rest than the winner of this remaining quarter final by the time that they meet in the semi-final on Thursday.
