Espanyol too short for basement clash

20Dec 2012

Primera Division Spanyol

Espanyol host Deportivo in a clash of the bottom two clubs in La Liga and while Espanyol have home advantage, Paul Robinson thinks they are too short at odds-on.

It's been a miserable season thus far for Espanyol. They began with five defeats from their opening half dozen fixtures and they didn't record their first victory till the end of October. Currently in 19th place, they are only being kept off the foot of the table by virtue of goal difference.

The board finally had enough of the poor results and on the 28th of November, Javier Aguirre, was brought in as manager to try and turn it around. The Mexican has made a decent start, earning draws in their last three games, including holding Real Madrid at the Bernabeu last time out. While that is impressive, they aren't victories and that's what they are odds-on to do this evening.

Deportivo are back in the top flight after storming to the Segunda Division title last year. They've found it tough going up against the big boys again though and their 12 point haul from 16 games has left them propping up the table.

It's fairly easy to identify the problem; the defence have shipped 37 goals to date, which is by far the worst record in the division. They have netted 21 themselves, and that's been their saving grace really as they've outscored every other side in the bottom seven.

On the road, José Luis Oltra's men have played eight, drawn four and lost four. That means they've avoided defeat 50% of the time and tonight's match sees them take on their weakest opponents yet.

While I appreciate that Deportivo are a pretty poor outfit who will struggle this year, Espanyol aren't much better either. They may have improved under new management, but they still aren't winning. Their current odds of 1.86 are just too short for my money and that's why I'm making them my lay of the day.
