Golf: Three picks for Gleneagles

Europe captain Paul McGinley will have three wildcard picks for the 2014 Ryder Cup showdown at Gleneagles, one more than Jose Maria Olazabal did last year.

McGinley, whose team are 4/5 with bet365 to win the Ryder Cup outright next year, has opted to mirror the three picks which US captain Tom Watson will have for the Gleneagles match-up. "You only need to look at the record books to see that we haven't done too badly of late, so I didn't see the need to make sweeping changes," McGinley explained. "I've kept the qualification list order the same as Olly had it for Medinah, the only difference being that I've increased the number of picks from two to three. "I've done that to give myself a little bit of extra flexibility when it comes to making my selections." Olazabal picked Ian Poulter and Nicolas Colsaerts in 2012, with the former scoring four points out of four to inspire a 14.5-13.5 victory quickly christened the Miracle at Medinah.
