Allen has made a big impression at the Crucible ever since his debut in 2007, rattling in a plethora of high breaks to give the top players a run for their money from the outset. He claimed Ronnie's scalp en route to the 2009 semis and followed up with quarter-final appearances in 2010 and 2011. That liking for longer matches was confirmed when finishing runner-up to Trump in the 2011 UK Championship. In the meantime, his all-round game has come on leaps and bounds and on most recent evidence, he must rate a very serious candidate. 'The Pistol' was superb when winning the World Open in early March, where nobody got within two frames of him.
