Premier League Injuries: No Fergie swansong for Michu

10May 2013

England - Premier League

Steven Gerrard, Michu and Morgan Schneiderlin will all be big misses for their clubs this weekend...

Steven Gerrard - Fulham v Liverpool (Sunday, 15:00)

The one club in the land that was the most relieved to hear of Sir Alex Ferguson's impending retirement would be the club he has successfully knocked off their f****** perch. However, this news was tempered by some much more unwelcome tidings for Liverpool. Their own club talisman Steven Gerrard was ruled out for the remaining two games of the season in order to undergo surgery on a troublesome shoulder. The skipper was hoping to complete a first ever Premier League campaign in which he's started every game but it wasn't to be. Without him, Liverpool lack drive and vision in central midfield, especially with Joe Allen sidelined as well. Fulham will be delighted by his omission for the Reds, who've now drawn four of their last five.

Recommended Bet: Back the draw @ 3.65

Morgan Schneiderlin - Sunderland v Southampton (Sunday, 15:00)

Southampton's French midfield anchor has been one of the unsung heroes of the Saints' Premier League campaign to date. Playing in the unheralded role of holding midfield, Schneiderlin does all the destructive work with minimum of fuss and ruthless efficiency, backed up by the statisticians at Opta. According to them, the midfielder has actually completed the most tackles of any player in the top flight this season. To lose him at this stage, when not yet safe from relegation, is catastrophic news for Mauricio Pochettino and the south coast club. Sunderland will of course be charged up for this game and, worryingly for Saints' fans, their team has lost 60% of games without Schneiderlin.

Recommended Bet: Back Sunderland to win @ 2.82

Michu - Man United v Swansea (Sunday, 16:00, Sky Sports 1)

Even though Swansea managed to quench their extensive winless drought against Wigan without their top scorer Michu, two of their three goals at the DW Stadium owed more to shambolic Latics defending than guile. Prior to Tuesday's match, the Swans had gone three games without rippling the opposition's net. Furthermore, the only other player to have scored for Swansea aside from Michu in the preceding eight Premier League games was fellow striker Luke Moore. Next up, a trip to Old Trafford for Sir Alex Ferguson's last ever home game in charge of Man United, a daunting prospect for any visiting team. Other than Michu, only his compatriot Pablo Hernandez of the current Swansea squad has scored against top-six opposition in the league this season.

Best Bet: Back Man United to win to nil @ 2.36
