Rennes to upset the odds at Lille

15Feb 2013

Ligue1

Lille are odds-on for the visit of Rennes in Ligue One tonight but with just one win in their last five in the league, Paul Robinson believes they have to be taken on.

Lille are having a poor campaign; 10th in the league with just eight wins from 24 fixtures and they lost five of their six matches in Europe to bomb out in the group phase. They ended a run of four without victory in Ligue One last time by shocking Lyon 1-3 at Stade de Gerland, although OL were coming off the back of a terrible result at Ajaccio.

Rudi Garcia's side have been relatively solid at home this term; losing just twice to PSG and Nice, but they have only won five of 11 matches, which is a win percentage of less than 50. Interestingly only one of those five victories came against a team in the top half of the division and against sides in the top six they have picked up one point from a possible nine.

Rennes had a terrible start to their season; losing four of their first five games and winning just one their first half dozen. They've been flying since though and the catalyst for their good run was a 2-0 victory over today's opponents, back in September.

Frédéric Antonetti's  men are up in fifth place, just three points off a Champions League qualifying spot. Away from Stade de la Route de Lorient, The Red and Blacks have lost only one of their last seven and picked up 16 points from a possible 21. That run included a 2-1 win at PSG, even though they played with nine men for nearly half the game.

Simply put, Lille are far too short for this match at around the 1.94 mark and that's why I have to make them my lay of the day.
