Betfair Masters Snooker Day Six Tips: Trust both favourites to deliver

Despite the world's two leading players both needing miraculous comebacks just to get through the first round, Paul Krishnamurty expects Judd Trump and Mark Selby to further their the Betfair Masters bids with plenty to spare...

It is hard to recall a snooker tournament with so many dramatic comebacks and late finishes than we've seen already at this year's Betfair Masters but, after three final frame deciders on the spin, we're probably due a more one-sided contest and the world's leading two players look well placed to deliver just that in the quarter-finals.

Thrilling as their comebacks were, there's no reason to get over-excited about either of Judd Trump or Mark Selby's first-round performances, yet their games look in considerably better shape than today's opponents.

First up, the Juddernaut takes on Graeme Dott, who's never reached a Masters semi-final in over a decade of trying. Dott didn't need anything special to get past a typically frustrating Stephen Maguire and enjoyed plenty of good run during that 6-5 victory. Maguire was getting at least two or three chances per frame, which would surely be ruinous against a heavy scorer like Trump. Moreover, having held his nerve impressively to complete what seemed an unlikely comeback against Barry Hawkins, it would be no surprise to see Judd step up a gear and produce something special.

Selby's comeback from 5-1 down was even more remarkable, whatever help he received from his opponent's loss of nerve. In truth, Selby didn't do all that much wrong to lose those early frames as Stuart Bingham simply wasn't missing. The Jester's game looked in decent nick throughout, which absolutely cannot be said of today's opponent. Mark Williams'victory over Matthew Stevens was a turgid affair, following an even worse display at the Masters. For my money, the only way Williams is going to challenge in majors nowadays would be via using his vast experience to out-think opponents. That won't offer much advantage against a tactically smart grinder like Selby.

My main betting plan is to effectively place a double on the two favourites, by backing Trump at 1.38, then if he wins, re-investing the entire returns on Selby at 1.4. Combined, this bet pays around 1.9. Alternatively for punters who prefer smaller risk bets, try two correct scores in each, on Trump to win 6-2, 6-3 and Selby to win by a 6-1, 6-2 margin.
