Chardy and Seppi set for a bruising encounter

AusOpen 2010

Sean Calvert is in good tipping form at the moment and he brings us his first selections from week two of the Australian Open...

Saturday night was another good one for this column, with both of my recommended bets proving successful.

The Nicolas Almagro vs Janko Tipsarevic match went precisely the way I predicted, with Tipsy chalking up his 30th career retirement or withdrawal after almost two sets.

This time it was a heel injury, but whatever, it was an easy winner and that was followed by a comfortable straight sets win for Aga Radwanska over Ana Ivanovic.

Tonight's schedule features Andy Murray, Roger Federer, Serena Williams and Vika Azarenka and the former will surely be having a comfortable morning workout against a hobbled Gilles Simon.

I can imagine the Frenchman waking up and grimacing at the thought of facing Murray while carrying an injury and having played an insanely long five set tussle the previous round.

The layers are taking no chances with Murray on this as a consequence and surely a Simon retirement is likely.

But a match that could well go long is the clash between another pair of players that endured five setters in the last round in Jeremy Chardy vs Andreas Seppi.

Both of these players rely on their forehands to win their matches and while Chardy's is the more fearsome weapon it can go AWOL and Seppi's is the more trustworthy, which is why he's a fairly narrow favourite.

Surprisingly, this is the first meeting between the pair on tour, but it's hard to see either player winning the match comfortably and I'm on the over 41.5 total games mark at around 1.90.

In the women's draw tonight I strongly fancy Sloane Stephens to nullify the often wild ball bashing of Bojana Jovanovski.

The young American has much more variety in her game and is far more consistent than the Serb, who has done well to reach this stage of the tournament.

They haven't played each other so far in their young careers, but I really don't rate Jovanovski particularly highly, as she is very one dimensional at this stage in her career, with anything other than whacking it from the baseline a rarity in her matches.

The same could be said of many players these days of course, but all Stephens needs to do to win this is to mix the play up a bit and let Bojana punch herself out.

The wager that I like in this one is for Stephens to win 2-0 at around 1.84.
