Crunch time for The Netherlands

13Jun 2012

EURO2012

Here we are only at the second round of group games and already one of the pre-tournament favourites are fighting to stay in it. The Netherlands play Germany today and they will be hoping that their wasteful habits against Denmark in the opening game are behind them. Any team that begins their group with a defeat are under pressure. It is even worse for The Netherlands because with the greatest respect to Denmark, they were beaten by the weakest team in the group on paper.

So having to then play Germany in the next match is making life very tough for the men in orange. A second defeat would come close to eliminating them and could eliminate them depending on the result in the other game. There have been many classic encounters between these two great footballing nations down the years starting with the 1974 World Cup final. This was held in Munich and West Germany then began a period of total dominance in world football.

It is also fair to say that there is no love lost between these two sides either as history has proven down the years. Germany are many peoples favourites for the tournament as many people believe that the chances of Spain winning three consecutive tournaments may be asking too much. However Germany didn't play too well in their opening 1-0 win over Portugal and were not playing to their usual standard.
