Euro2012: England - Ukraine

This evening sees the group stages of Euro 2012 come to a conclusion. Last night saw Spain and Italy make it through to the quarter-finals at the expense of Croatia. As it stands now, only nine teams can still lift the trophy but one more will be eliminated this evening. The host nation Ukraine need a victory over England to book their place in the last eight and that will be tough based on how England have played so far.

Their talisman Andriy Shevchenko is a big injury doubt for them and Ukraine badly need his presence on the pitch. Meanwhile in the England camp, confidence has been boosted by two decent performances which has put them in with a great chance of reaching the quarter-finals. An opening 1-1 draw against a very tough French team was followed by a 3-2 win over Sweden. That match showed that England have resolve after their led 1-0 and then came back from 2-1 down to win.

The final group games are turning into sudden death and should France and England make it to the last eight then the usual suspects will all have made it through the group stages with the exception of The Netherlands. It is vital for a squad to be in harmony to have any chance at all and both England and Ukraine seem to be doing well on that score.
