Euro2012: Italy - Croatia

Italy are one of the dark horses for Euro 2012 and they got their tournament off to a good start holding the double World and European Champions Spain to a 1-1 draw on Sunday. They face a dangerous Croatia side today who will be full of confidence after their 3-1 victory over the Irish that sees them top the group. A victory for Croatia could see them become the first team to qualify for the last eight.

Croatia are a young nation but they have already made their mark on world football. They reached the final of the 1998 World Cup after also having a good Euro 96 tournament in England. They also lost to Turkey in a penalty shootout in the last European Championships four years ago when they really should have gone through to the semi-finals.

 

It is difficult to call this game and it really could go either way. Italy have once again been rocked by scandal but that often pulls a team together. To win any international football tournament then a team needs to not only bond together but it needs to fight for the cause and if there is a cause to fight for then that can only help a teams chances of success. Italy just could be the team that sneaks in through the back door when everyone else was talking about Spain, Germany and The Netherlands.
