Euro2012: Spain - Ireland

EURO2012

Ireland have an absolute mountain to climb now to get out of Group C. After losing to Croatia 3-1 in their opening game, they now have the unenviable task of having to take at least a point from the game against the reigning European and World Champions Spain. While The Netherlands still have a chance of qualifying from Group B after suffering two defeats, that cannot possibly happen to Ireland because two teams already have a point each.

If Ireland lose to Spain then they are out of the tournament whatever the result in the Croatia vs Italy encounter. Spain showed their metal coming from behind to draw with a very stubborn Italy team four days ago and are still very much a class act. Ireland on the other hand faced perhaps the toughest of all of the groups. They had to face the previous two World Cup winners and the reigning European Champions.

Add to that a Croatian team packed full of quality and technical ability and it all seemed to much for the gallant Irish. It would be a huge shock for them to even draw with Spain but they certainly have the players to do that. Much will fall on the shoulders of their strikers Robbie Keane and Kevin Doyle and they need to take any chance that comes their way for Ireland to have any hope of qualifying.
