Euro2012: The tournament so far

EURO2012

We are now only seven games away from completing the 2012 European Championships and now it is time to assess how the tournament has been so far. In many ways this has been one of the best European Championships in memory. No fewer than 60 goals have been scored in the 24 games so far for an average of 2.5 goals per game.

There have been many exciting games and the decision taken by UEFA to change the qualification criteria to favour teams with the better head to head record made for very exciting finished in all of the groups. For example Germany who won their two opening games came within one goal of elimination in their final group game. Russia also went out after winning their opening match 4-1.

In fact The Netherlands after losing their opening two games could have still progressed through to the knockout stages at the expense of Denmark and Portugal. UEFA will certainly follow these guidelines again for the 2016 European Championships for sure. We have also had the excitement of storms suspending games and another controversy regarding goal line technology with the Ukraine goal that wasn't in their game against England.
