There were plenty of upsets on third round day with Newcastle, Wolves and Nottingham Forest all going out, but it's Macclesfield who take the plaudits after a fine comeback win over Cardiff. Joe Dyer rounds up the pick of the in-play odds from Betfair

The FA Cup third round began with a Premier League side tumbling out when Newcastle were beaten at Brighton, though there were few shocks for top-flight sides in the Saturday 3pms.

But it was a different story for Championship sides with leaders Cardiff, promotion contenders Nottingham Forest and former Premier League outfit Wolves all exiting the Cup at the earliest stage while second-placed Hull were held by Leyton Orient.

Huge in-play prices were matched on Macclesfield, who went behind to a Nathaniel Jarvis goal as Championship pacesetters Cardiff looked to ease themselves into the fourth round. But Matthew Barnes-Homer hadn't read the script, striking twice in the last five minutes to seal a stirring win for the Conference Premier side. Macclesfield touched 95.0 on Betfair while Cardiff were backed at a low of 1.1 to win.

There was another victory for the Conference over the Championship when Luton overcame Wolves at Kenilworth Road. The Hatters only touched a high of 4.4 to beat Stale Solbakken's wildly out-of-form side but they duly obliged courtesy of a 46th minute effort from Alex Lawless.

The day began in Brighton where Gus Poyet's Seagulls flew past a woeful Newcastle outfit. The home team scored once in each half, and blanked their visitors to boot, to reward backers of a Brighton win to nil at 4.8.

League One outfit Leyton Orient lit up the Cup in 2011 and they nearly pulled off a major upset at the KC Stadium after taking a late lead against Steve Bruce's promotion-chasing Hull.

But with just seconds left the Championship outfit gave themselves a Cup lifeline thanks to a Nick Proschwitz goal. The Os were backed at a low of 1.1 while the draw touched 13.0.

League One got the better of the Championship at the City Ground where Oldham got the better of five-goal thriller against Nottingham Forest. Paul Dickov's battlers conceded early - at which point Forest were backed at 1.19 to win - but struck back with three of their own to leap into the fourth round. The latics were backed at an in-play high of 34.0.

Sunderland flirted with a Cup exit at Bolton, going two goals down but producing a mini comeback of their own to level matters. The Trotters traded at 1.11 when 2-0 up with the draw backed at 12.5.

There were two all-Premier League clashes in the 3pm kick-offs with QPR hosting West Brom and Chelsea travelling to Southampton.

While Rangers and WBA kept it low-scoring with one goal apiece, the Blues struck five times to obliterate an early Saints lead. The drama, however, was all at Loftus Road where Kieron Dyer scored at the death to save QPR from defeat. The Baggies were backed at a low of 1.08 in-play, while the draw traded at 9.4. Dyer was backed at 10.5 to score anytime.

Chelsea were backed at 8.8 to win from behind at St Mary's while over 5.5 goals touched 24.0 on the exchange.
