Golf: McGinley can't wait to take on Watson

17Jan 2013

Paul McGinley has been named as captain of the Europe team for the defence of the Ryder Cup against the USA at Gleneagles in 2014.

The 46-year-old Irishman has been vice-captain at each of the last two Ryder Cups, while he also played in three matches, holing the winning putt in the 2002 clash at the Belfry. It had appeared that 2010 captain Colin Montgomerie was going to be handed the role again for 2014, before the likes of Rory McIlroy, Luke Donald, Justin Rose and Ian Poulter all gave their public support to McGinley. Europe are 4/5 with bet365 to win the match while the USA, under the leadership of Tom Watson, are 5/4 to win back the trophy with an outright victory. McGinley said of the prospect of pitting his wits against Watson: "I am relishing the thought of taking on one of my great heroes. He is a wonderful person and a great ambassador for the game of golf."
