Lee Dixon: Spurs won't fluff their lines at home to Sunderland

I've written elsewhere on this site that I fancy Arsenal to get the win they need at St James' Park so I'm afraid Spurs will be coming up short once again. I say that without wishing to sound like a smug Arsenal fan of course!

 

I do think there will be a little joy for the home crowd on the final season with Tottenham getting the win they need against Paolo di Canio's inconsistent side. The Sunderland manager has achieved his first goal since replacing Martin O'Neill by beating relegation and the real hard work will take place over summer. What happens to Sunderland at Spurs is of little consequence - though wins are always welcome of course - and I can't see the home side having any difficulties breaking the visitors down, even if Di Canio's been rightly geeing the players up ahead of the fixture.

 

But if Tottenham could hand pick an opponent for the final week it would be Sunderland. Missing key players, in poor form and in the Premier League for another year - a fired up Spurs should have too much for the visitors. Di Canio's passion and motivation will only get Sunderland so far. Andre Villas-Boas' team have a vast amount more quality.

 

Providing I'm right about Sunday's games for the two north London clubs, will fifth place be considered a failure for Spurs?

 

I'm a big believer that you finish where you deserve to be at the end of the campaign. You can always go back to one point in a season and point to a defining result but people tend to forget the times their team nicked an undeserved win. To me the top four, as it stands, looks about right though I'm sure Spurs will improve over the summer in preparation for next year.

 

And they should sign off for the season with a decent win against a Sunderland side that has been shorn of its best attackers and I like the home defence's chances of keeping a clean sheet. Spurs have their wobbly moments at times, and they aren't prolific scorers at home, but they have a near enough full-strength team for Sunday and it's difficult to imagine they will fluff their lines.

 

A home win to nil is available to back at just under evens but I prefer to play bigger odds on two correct score bets at 2-0 and 3-0 at 7.6 and 10.0.
