Mourinho doubts spending spree

England - Premier League

Jose Mourinho is looking to improve the Chelsea squad he has inherited from Rafa Benitez rather than embark on a massive summer of spending.

The Portuguese is eager to help the Blues challenge for the Premier League title again and, with the Blues 9/4 with bet365 to be crowned champions, Mourinho is determined to improve the players already on the payroll. Mourinho told Chelsea TV: "We have to improve the team, but when I say improve the team people are already thinking about how many millions Chelsea will spend. "When I say improve the team, I mean through work. If, after that, we can improve the team by buying a couple of players it is fantastic." During his first spell in charge at Stamford Bridge between 2004 and 2007, Mourinho won the league title twice, the FA Cup and two League Cups. He has also guided Inter Milan and Real Madrid to domestic league titles since leaving England, with Inter also crowned as Champions League winners in 2010.
