Next Reading Manager: Adkins fave after Poyet's snub

England - Premier League

With Gus Poyet deciding to stay put at Brighton, axed Southampton boss Nigel Adkins has moved into pole position for the vacant Reading manager's post...

After holding preliminary talks about the vacant manager's position at Reading on Wednesday, Brighton boss Gus Poyet has since rejected a move to the Madejski.

Instead of leaving Brighton to join the Royals, the Seagulls manager has opted to make the most of the international week instead, jetting off for a brief break in the  Caribbean, before returning to The Amex rather than Berkshire.

Poyet's commitment to Brighton will come as a big relief to their fans as the Uruguayan has guided the south coast outfit to the very brink of the play-offs in the  Championship. Only goal difference separates Brighton in seventh from a Leicester side in sixth without a win in their last five league games.

After thrashing old enemies and promotion rivals Crystal Palace 3-0 last Sunday, Brighton's chances of going up are now rated at 6.3.

So, where does Poyet's Royals' rejection leave the market now? It would seem the post will now be filled by either one of two men, with recently dumped Southampton  boss Nigel Adkins leading the way just ahead of caretaker boss Eamonn Dolan.

Adkins is currently available at 3.35, with Dolan just behind the former Saints boss, rated at 5.1.

Adkins, who was harshly sacked by Southampton back in January, has always been in the shortlist for the vacant role ever since Brian Mcdermott was relieved of his  duties two weeks ago.

Now it seems that Adkins has just moved to the front of the cue, though there is no official word from his camp as yet.

Russian owner Anton Zingarevich, who arrived this summer, will have the final say on proceedings, with his other option being to stick with interim coach Dolan until  the end of this season at least.

The Reading academy manager was the man who took charge of last weekend's narrow defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford and Royals stopper Alex McCarthy has  offered his backing.

McCarthy said: "I think he's come in and he'll do a good job for us. We'll have to see how the games turn out but I think he's got a great chance and all the lads are  with him."
