Pardew says Newcastle are safe

England - Premier League

Alan Pardew has predicted that Newcastle United "don't need to worry" about the threat of relegation, with nine games to go before the end of the Premier League season.

A 2-1 win against Stoke on Sunday has moved the North-East outfit nine points ahead of third-from-bottom Wigan and Pardew is convinced that this cushion will be too big for clubs battling against the drop to make up. "That's (Premier League survival) done; we don't need to worry about that now," he told the BBC. Pardew says he is now focusing his efforts on the visit to St James' Park of Russian heavyweights Anzhi Makhachkala in the second leg of the Europa League round of 16 on Thursday. The first leg finished goalless in Moscow and Newcastle are quoted 5/4 to qualify by bet365, while Pardew's men can also be backed at 20/1 to win the competition. He added: "What we've done is set ourselves up for what I'm hoping is going to be a special night for us. "We've set the scene for that and I can't wait already. I hope we get as many people as we can afford to come fill the place up."
