PDC World Championship Tips: Asset to crush Matchstick

It's the opening night of the PDC World Championships and Jaymes Monte has picked out his best bet for the night...

Tonight Adrian Lewis begins the defence of a world title that he has made his own over the past two years, and hell be hoping to avoid a similar scare to last year's opening round match when the unfancied Nigel Heydon came within a leg of eliminating the defending champion 3-0.

 

But it is not Lewis's match with Gino Vos that interests me from a betting perspective, instead I'm opting to back a player who I am not usually inclined to side with.

 

Paul Nicholson has had a less than impressive couple of years since casting himself in the image of darts' bad boy. After beating Phil Taylor at the 2011 UK Open the Aussie-Geordie let his mouth go, without having the ability to back up his claims of going on to win multiple Majors and world titles.

 

This year he has only once made it past the last 16 of a Major tournament (PDC World Cup discounted) and has slipped to number 16 in the world rankings as a consequence. He has, however, shown signs of improvement over the last couple of months, and more importantly the draw has been kind in pitting him against a Co Stompe whose game is in rapid decline.

 

A run to the final of the Dutch Masters last month preceded a slightly unfortunate Group stage knockout at the Grand Slam of Darts for The Asset. He disappointed again in the Players Championship Finals a fortnight ago, losing in a final-leg shoot-out with Ronnie Baxter, but I'm willing to forgive him that hiccup when looking forward to this match-up.

 

Mainly because of Stompe's own poor form. Only once in the last six months has the Dutchman gone past the Last 16 stage of any ranking event, and you have to go back more than two years for the last time he passed the last 16 stage in a Major tournament.

 

Having only managed to qualify for this year's championships via the European Order of Merit, the likeable Stompe's days in front of the cameras appear to be numbered; with a career in presenting from behind the cameras on Dutch television lying in wait.
