Premier League on Betfair: Wigan staring relegation in the face after Newcastle and Norwich wins

14May 2013

England - Premier League

FA Cup joy may be short-lived in Wigan after Newcastle and Norwich exit the relegation picture leaving the Latics a huge task. Meanwhile in Manchester, Fergie's boys  leave it typically late before sealing a farwell victory...

Wigan may be FA Cup winners but The Championship is beckoning very loudly following Sunday's results in the Premier League.

Wins for Norwich and Newcastle takes those two teams out of the scrap at the bottom with just Sunderland and Aston Villa in danger.

But the Latics have never traded lower than their current 1.06 and they must get something from Tuesday's visit to Arsenal  - and really only three points will do - if they are not to drop out of the Premier League.

That means huge odds are available on relegation for Sunderland (27.0) and Villa (48.0) while Fulham and Southampton can both be backed at 650.0.

Norwich had been on an awful run of form prior to today's visit from West Brom, winning just two Premier League matches in 2013, but they turned that around with a 4-0  thumping of the Baggies. That scoreline was backed at an enormous 100.0. The Canaries had traded at a low of 1.6 to go down.

Newcastle didn't win in such emphatic fashion but a 2-1 defeat of QPR ensured they will spend another season in the Premier League. The Toon had touched 3.2 in Betfair's relegation market.

All eyes were on Sir Alex Ferguson in the late kick-off as the Manchester United manager took to the Old Trafford dugout for the last time. Capital One Cup winners  Swansea did not come to make up the numbers though, Michu cancelling out Javier Hernandez's opener.

But in typical United fashion the home team were not to be beaten and they left it late as ever with Rio Ferdinand scoring in the 87th minute to secure a win that was  backed at a high of 4.7 on Betfair.

There were wins for both Merseyside outfits, with next United manager David Moyes bidding farewell to Goodison park with a 2-0 defeat of West Ham, and Daniel Sturridge  scoring a hat-trick as Liverpool beat Fulham 3-1.
