Reading sack Brian McDermott

England - Premier League

In a surprise move, Reading have decided to part company with Brian McDermott this afternoon. Mike Norman has the details...

Reading have surprisingly sacked Brian McDermott today with just nine games of the season remaining.

The 51-year-old led the Berkshire club to automatic promotion last season but following four successive defeats in the Premier League the Royals are four points from safety and are currently red hot 1.13 favourites in Betfair's Relegation market.

But it is the timimg of the sacking that is the surprising aspect with a new manager having just nine games - perhaps less if not employed by the weekend - to guide Reading to safety.

A statement from the club read, "Owner Anton Zingarevich wishes to place on record his thanks to Brian", before going on to say, "The search for a successor starts immediately. It is hoped a new manager will be in place as soon as possible."

Some usual suspects are at the forefront of Betfair's Next Reading Manager market including Roberto di Matteo, Nigel Adkins, and Paolo Di Canio, all of whom have either resigned or been sacked from managerial roles already this season.

Reading's next league game is this Saturday afternoon where they face the daunting task of going to Old Trafford to face champions elect Manchester United (a game in which they can be backed at 24.0 to win).

Any new boss might just want to wait until Monday morning before taking up his new role!
