Real value to be had in Basque Country

 

Real Sociedad are odds-on for their clash with Real Betis in La Liga tonight but Paul Robinson thinks that viewers tuning into Sky Sports One at 20:00 will see the team from Seville pick up a positive result in Basque Country.

 

Sociedad are flying high and they find themselves in sixth place, thanks largely to the fact that since a 0-1 loss to Espanyol, they have fell to just one defeat in their next 16 matches, and that was a narrow 4-3 loss at the Bernebeu. That hot streak included a home win over Barcelona and the White-Blues picked up 10 points from a possible 12 in February.

 

It should be taken into consideration however that of those 16 matches, they did draw seven of them, so their win percentage is only 50% for that period. If we break it down even further to home games played, of which there were nine in all competitions, that percentage drops to 44.44%. Last time out at Anoeta Stadium, Philippe Montanier's side failed to even beat Levante, who were reduced to 10 men before the hour mark.

 

Real Betis were flying earlier in the season, thanks largely to their ability to pick up plenty of victories instead of draws. They fell into a bit of a rough patch though; knocked out of the Copa del Rey by Atletico Madrid over two legs and two points from a possible 15 in the league. They ended that run emphatically last week though as they stuffed Malaga 3-0, scoring all three goals in the first half.

 

Pepe Mel will be hoping that his Betis team can build on that and begin a second push for fourth place, as they are now just three points off the pace. It's clearly a concern that they've lost their last three away from Seville, but before that they'd won six from nine on the road this term, and lost just twice.

 

It's fifth against sixth in the battle for the last remaining Champions League spot this evening and while Sociedad have the more solid recent form, on the whole I can't have them as short as 1.88 and that's why I'm making them my lay of the day.
