Snooker: Title drought over for Maguire

19Feb 2013

Stephen Maguire, who is 40/1 with bet365 to win the World Championship, has picked up a major confidence boost for the remainder of the season by winning the Welsh Open. Maguire, who had been without a tournament success since the China Open in 2008, held his nerve to edge out Stuart Bingham 9-8 in Newport and now hopes to enjoy a productive end to the campaign.

"I forgot what it felt like to be the winner at the end of the tournament, so it is the best feeling ever really," Maguire said. "It is a nice boost leading up to the World Championship in a couple of months, but there are three tournaments before then." The China Open is among the three tournaments still to be played before the World Championship in Sheffield, which gets underway on 20th April. Twelve months ago Maguire lost in the final in China, being defeated 10-9 by Peter Ebdon, who recorded four centuries and seven half-century breaks in the final.
