Spain - History Makers

It is only when we look back many years later do we truly appreciate how good a football team have really been. The great Brazil team of 1970 were really only seen as greats many years later. However what Spain have now achieved surpasses any other team in history. To win three consecutive tournaments has never been achieved before by any other team either in Europe or South America.

No team had ever defended the European Championships and Spain broke that record brushing aside an Italy team that had been difficult to break down in this tournament. A scoreline of 4-0 looks harsh on Italy but the truth is that Spain were magnificent. An early goal by David Silva settled their nerves and they never looked back from that.

Now they go into the qualifying games for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and will be clear favourites to win again. No European team has ever won the World Cup on South American soil and only twice in the history of the World Cup has a team defended it. That was Italy who won in 1934 and 1938 and Brazil who won in 1958 and 1962. I for one wouldn't back against Spain adding yet another title to that list in what has been an absolutely amazing run of success..........congratulations to Spain who are now arguably the greatest international side to have ever played the game.
