Suarez and Bale both tempted by lure of Real Madrid

The timing of Luis Suarez's latest comments couldn't have been any more apt as his current club Liverpool announced a fee had been agreed for Celta Vigo striker Iago Aspas yesterday.

 

By bringing in 25-year-old Aspas, it could be read that Brendan Rodgers is already planning for life without Suarez, though such a void is not easily pluggable.

 

Talking to a radio station in his native Uruguay Suarez admitted: "It would be very hard to say no to Real Madrid." Liverpool's top scorer this season, with 23 Premier League goals also added he was: "not prepared to continue suffering at the hands of the English journalists", suggesting his family had been affected as well.

 

This makes ill-received news indeed for Liverpool fans, spelling a complete u-turn from Suarez who had only been making positive noises about remaining at Anfield next season until these latest revelations.

 

Without Champions League football it was always going to be tricky for Liverpool to hold on to their prize asset and Suarez' ban adds an extra obstacle into the equation.

 

Aspas has potential after enjoying a fruitful season at relegation threatened Celta Vigo, notching 12 goals and adding a further six assists in La Liga,

 

However, aside from a 25-goal campaign in Spain's Segunda Division, there's nothing to suggest he's ready to make a Suarez-esque impact.

 

If Liverpool are to be robbed of Suarez it throws serious doubts over the Reds' bid for the Champions League spots next season - currently rated at 3.65.

 

News of a similarly damaging blow for Tottenham has also surfaced thanks to comments made by Gareth Bale's agent Jonathan Barnett to a Spanish television show.

He said:  "If somebody like Mr Perez was interested in Gareth Bale it would be a great honour and we would listen."

 

While such comments are only to be expected from the money men behind top players such as Bale, it would be foolish to think the lure of the Bernabeu, and more importantly Champions League football, would not turn Bale's head.

 

If the PFA and Writers Player of the Season were to exit White Hart Lane Tottenham's top four ambitions will be heavily dented, with Spurs currently available at 3.05 to make it in there next season.

 

The simple fact is there aren't many players of Bale or Suarez's calibre on the planet at present and Real Madrid have the kudos and the finances to snare them.
