Watford to edge Cardiff in table-topper

5Apr 2013

England - The Championship

Christian Crowther previews the weekend's Championship fixtures, predicting another big scalp for Watford, a fourth consecutive win for in-form Derby and a low-scoring relegation feud at Huddersfield...

Derby 2.18 v Ipswich 3.7; The Draw 3.45

This Saturday afternoon clash throws together two teams near the top of the Championship form table. With six games left, Derby's late surge has probably arrived a little too late in the day for them to be considered play-off candidates, but three wins on the spin in this division is no mean feat.

Nigel Clough's boys have been particularly strong at Pride Park this season too, only losing three at home in the league all season and two of those have arrived against current top-four teams.

Although far from safe, visitors Ipswich have steadily climbed away from the foot of the table since Mick McCarthy's appointment and it's now four unbeaten for the Tractor Boys, including two wins. So something has to give in the east midlands.

The key to this one may lie in the fact that Ipswich just don't score goals on their travels. McCarthy's men have not notched away from Portman Road in their last five Championship road trips, culminating in three 0-0 draws and two defeats.

Given that this confident Derby side have registered seven goals in their last three, the Rams should prevail.

Recommended Bet: Back Derby to win to nil @ 3.8

Huddersfield 2.36 v Peterborough 3.2; The Draw 3.5

As far as shaping the Championship relegation landscape goes, this is by far the most noteworthy fixture of the weekend, featuring two teams currently occupying 22nd and 23rd place respectively.

Huddersfield may sit one place and one point above visitors Peterborough, but seven games unbeaten for the Posh compared to three defeats in four for the Terriers, tells a story of teams travelling in opposite directions. Six losses from his ten games in charge so far for ex-Coventry boss Mark Robins does not make pleasant reading for Town fans.

Despite James Vaughan's recent good form, no one else seems able to share the goalscoring burden; leading to three 1-0 losses in four, including two straight at the John Smith's Stadium.

Away from home especially, Darren Ferguson's strugglers have only really ground out results themselves - scoring just two goals in their last three away from London Road. It's hard to envisage a goalfest in this relegation blockbuster.

Recommended Bet: Back Under 2.5 goals @ 1.99

Watford 2.46 v Cardiff 3.0; The Draw 3.55

Just days after taming the Tigers, Watford have another cosmic collision at the top of the Championship against leaders Cardiff.

While designs on the title may be a step too for Gianfranco Zola's exciting side - they are currently eight points behind the Bluebirds having played a game more - that win over Hull has certainly rubber-stamped their automatic promotion credentials and will give them the belief that they can beat Cardiff.

With neither side's form being what you'd deem electric - it's just two wins each from their previous six - this will surely prove a tight affair, especially given the stakes. Perhaps the most telling statisitc is that Cardiff have not beaten a current top-nine side so far in 2013, losing to Brighton and Middlesbrough before drawing with Leicester a few weeks back.

It's also worth noting that Watford have averaged two goals per game at home in their last six outings at Vicarage Road, whereas Cardiff's last six away games have yielded 1.17.

Recommended Bet: Back Watford to beat Cardiff 2-1 @ 9.8
