Wolves are perched across the trapdoor

If you're a fan of Brighton or Nottingham Forest then it's likely that you're still jumping for joy, but for others such as Wolves fans, you're probably reaching for  the whisky bottle.

 

It was another barmy night of results in the second tier on Tuesday and, for some, it could be defining as the season heads into the final bend.

 

Starting at the bottom and working up, Wolves' torrid campaign reached a low ebb last night as the midland club plummeted into the relegation places for the first time  this season following defeat to fellow strugglers Barnsley at Oakwell.

 

It's now a staggering ten games since Wanderers last secured a league victory and seven since Dean Saunders was pilfered from Doncaster in order to replace the axed  Stale Solbakken.

 

Wolves fans will now be trembling at the thought of successive relegations, rated at 3.9 following their slide into the relegation places.

 

And with new boss Saunders failing to keep Donny in the same division last season, these worries are more than justified.

 

Panic buttons will shortly be pressed at St Andrews too if Birmingham continue their poor form, following a drab 0-0 with Sheffield Wednesday which leaves them just  four points from danger and available to back at around 5.7 to go down.

 

The Blues have some highly-paid players still on their books such as Nikola Zigic - rumoured to earn over £50,000-per-week - though Lee Clark hasn't managed to get the  best out of his players regularly enough.

 

Having looked doomed for much of the season, Peterborough's resurgence is astonishing. The Posh did their chances of survival no harm at all, following up their famous  win over Leicester by thrashing Millwall 5-1 at The Den.

 

Darren Ferguson's side can now be laid at 1.77 to go down with only four points to make up to freefalling Huddersfield.

 

Elsewhere, by shocking Cardiff 2-0 in Wales, Brighton have provided a potential twist in the title race, though the Bluebirds are still as short as 1.45 for top spot with a five-point gap over Hull and a game in hand.

 

The Seagulls' chances of getting promoted also increased considerably, now rated at 8.2, after that huge away win, as Middlesbrough's stalemate at Burnley let Brighton close the gap on sixth to just two points, with a game spare.

 

Meanwhile, Leicester were the big losers in the hunt for automatic promotion as their second successive loss ensured that they slipped nine points behind second-placed  Hull and drifted to 4.0 to finish in the top two.
