Women's French Open Betting: Top seeds hoping to avoid early exit

With the first round of the French Open 2013 getting underway on Sunday, Abelson Info take a closer look at potential Day 1 shocks from the women's side of the draw...

Amongst the biggest names in action on Sunday are world number one Serena Williams, former champion Ana Ivanovic and last year's finalist Sara Errani.

The top trio are unlikely to encounter too many problems against their vastly inferior opponents, so in terms of first round shocks we may have to look elsewhere.

Williams will be confident of avoiding another first round exit at this venue when she takes on Anna Tatishvili, while Ivanovic and Errani go up against Petra Martic and Arantxa Rus respectively.

While Serena and Ivanovic have never faced their opponents before, Errani has yet to drop a set in three meetings with Rus and will be confident of advancing as she opens up the action on the Suzanne Lenglen court.

Meanwhile Williams' conqueror from last year, Virginie Razzano, is also in action on Sunday, as she takes on compatriot Claire Feuerstein. The former will be buoyed by her win over Tamira Paszek in Strasbourg last week, and has previously brushed her countrywomen aside in straight sets when they met on clay last year.

Elsewhere, Urszula Radwanska may be worth a small investment ahead of her clash with Venus Williams on Sunday afternoon.

The elder of the American sisters is not the force she once was, and the evidence was clear in her last appearance on this surface when British hopeful Laura Robson ended her run in Rome in the first round.

In contrast, Radwanska claimed the scalp of Ivanovic at the Foro Italico at the same stage, and at 2.38 she could well cause an upset if she is on her game.

Value can also be had in backing world number 26 Sorana Cirstea, when she takes on Kiki Bertens. Despite the Dutchwoman's lower world ranking, she has been installed as favourite for this clash as a result of her opponent's struggles on this surface in the last two years.

Considering the big stage and the desperate nature of the Romanian wanting to pull through her first round match, she looks tempting at 2.26.

Another worthwhile bet comes in the shape of Ayumi Morita, with the Japanese star out at 2.08 to prevail over 18-year-old Yulia Putintseva. Morita looked composed and comfortable on the clay in Rome, before having to withdraw mid-way through her third round clash against Victoria Azarenka citing health issues.

Provided she has fully recovered and can recapture that early form, she should have too

much for her inexperienced opponent, with a second-round clash with Errani on offer.

With more of the top seeds entering the fray on Monday, the opening day action from the French capital promises to get off to lively start.

Recommended Bets:

Back Morita to beat Putintseva @ 2.08

Back Cirstea to beat Bertens @ 2.32

Back Razzano to beat Feuerstein @ 1.72

Back U Radwanska to beat V Williams @ 2.34
